The Political Compass

The Political Compass is an anonymous test which takes only a couple minutes to complete. A few dozen questions are used to determine where you are located on a chart with two dimensions.

The first axis indicates where your socio-economic attitudes fall on the spectrum from Left-Wing Liberalism (-10) to Moderate (0) to Right-Wing Conservatism (+10). The second axis indicates where your social freedom attitudes fall on the spectrum from Libertarian (-10) to Moderate (0) to Authoritarian (+10).

Every time i take the test, my results show my social attitudes are extremely Libertarian (-9.44 today) with very far-left liberal leanings on topics of economics (-8.38 today).

I think an interesting third axis would be one which considers action rather than just motivation. On the low end would be a total non-participating attitude of Apathy (-10), while on the high end would be a super-busy Activist behavior (+10). Theoretically, i would consider myself to be somewhere around -3 or -4 (somewhat apathetic, but still involved). On one hand, i participate in my society to some extent (for example, i probably spend more time trying to be an educated voter than most Americans, and i'm very fastidious about things like paying my taxes, picking up litter, obeying traffic laws, et cetera) but on the other hand, i am absolutely not an Activist nowadays (my apathy and lethargy are rather constant, i hardly ever attend any kind of demonstrations in recent years). I hold many ideas and believe in the validity of many philosophies which could be considered ultra-liberal, perhaps even radical... but i hardly ever take any kind of action above and beyond the usual minimal sorts of community participation found among decent citizens.

Although individualism and freedom of my self-expression are so vitally important to me, i am much more quiet and reserved in my old age than when i was younger. What's the old Japanese proverb? "The protrusive nail will always be hammered down." I don't want to stick out too far, for fear of being hammered. But i don't automatically want to be the same kind of nail as all the others. I have interests and pursuits, but i like to keep quietly to myself.

Take the test at the Political Compass!
